BECOMING FIRE: Chasing the Passion to Protect, Serve and Love by Jennifer Clarke Eskew- A Book Review

Listen to Jill's interview with Jennifer Clarke Eskew- Ep 190!

Becoming Fire: Chasing the Passion to Protect, Serve, and Love—A True Crime Memoir by Jennifer Clark Eskew is much more than a collection of stories from behind the badge. It is a candid, gripping account of a trailblazer finding her footing in the male-dominated world of law enforcement, chasing her ambitions, and discovering that courage does not mean being untouched by fear.

Her journey begins well before the undercover assignments, with a childhood on a Virginia farm and the determination that carried her into the State Police Academy. The memoir follows roughly the first five years of her law-enforcement career, making the rookie experiences more than background: they show how ambition, hard-earned lessons, and encouragement from seasoned troopers helped shape the woman who would take on such dangerous work.

What pulled me in was Eskew’s ability to put me right beside her. As she trades her familiar identity for life undercover, the tension becomes almost unbearable. I knew she survived—I had met her—but that did not stop me from worrying through the dangerous encounters she describes. Her storytelling brings the rooms, the cars, and the uneasy atmosphere vividly to life, without letting the reader forget what is at stake.

The small details of her cover identity are especially memorable. As Lee, she had more than a different name: she had a driver’s license, a car registered in that name, even a library card and a cable bill. Those ordinary pieces of a life make the extraordinary assignment feel real. Just as striking is the limited preparation she describes—she was already deep into the work before attending an undercover school. The gap between the assignment’s demands and the training available adds another layer of unease.

Yet the book’s greatest strength may be its emotional honesty. Eskew makes room for love, heartbreak, humor, rookie mistakes, and the mentors who encouraged her along the way. The difficult helicopter story stayed with me, a reminder that wanting desperately to help does not always mean being able to make things right. These moments give the memoir a depth that an adrenaline-only account could never achieve.

Her reflections on what happens after an assignment also give the book weight. Eskew raises the need for meaningful briefings, debriefings, and support rather than simply moving on to the next task. Alongside the suspense, that perspective asks readers to consider what officers carry home with them—and why surviving an experience is not the same as leaving it behind.

The fire imagery and chapter-opening quotes tie her personal growth together beautifully. This is not a polished portrait of someone who always knew the right answer; it is a story of learning, determination, and the lasting cost of the work. I devoured Becoming Fire and finished wanting more. For readers drawn to true crime memoirs with both suspense and heart, this one deserves a place on your shelf.
